Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumbria and the Borders are graced with a beautiful landscape, diverse wildlife and a rich and deep heritage. The immense value of this, and the importance of continuing and evolving a vibrant community, seems to us to be vital reasons for taking our responsibility as a local business seriously. This is aside from the huge issues including global warming, sustainable resource use and poverty in developing countries, in which we also have a part to play. Therefore, at Northumbrian House we care about the impact our business has on the environment and care about our local suppliers.

Our Environmental Policy:

Northumbrian House is committed to run its business such that:

• We will measure and aim to improve how efficiently we use energy
• We will measure and aim to reduce the amount of waste produced, and optimise re-use and recycling
• We will monitor water usage and aim to reduce unnecessary consumption, and increase water harvesting
• We will use, wherever possible, local suppliers who are environmentally and ethically aware.
• We will run the garden organically to produce vegetables and fruit, as well as for display, and will develop habitats for wildlife
• We will work with local wildlife, heritage and other community groups.
• We will maintain the house and gardens in a way which respects and brings alive the architecture and history of the site.
• We will offer guests environmentally friendly ways of enjoying their holidays and provide them with information about the local environment and ways they can help.

Part of our commitment to the environment has been to join the Green Tourism Business Scheme.
